Station 9: The Great Shapes Race
Skills Content: Identifying plane and solid geometric figures by picture and description.
Objective: Students practice identifying plane and solid geometric shapes. Students will be asked to identify a picture of the shape, the shape in an everyday object, the shape by name, and riddles based on attributes (sides, flat surfaces, vertices, etc.)
Materials: playing pieces, die, pattern blocks (or counters), cards, game board (available for purchase through Teachers Pay Teachers), "I can" cards (attached)
Directions: A player picks a card. If he answers the question correctly, he rolls the die and moves clockwise that number of spaces. If he is incorrect he does not get to roll the die. If the card is not a question, the player follows the directions on the card instead (always moving around the board clockwise.)
As a player passes the finish line, he collects a pattern block shape but continues into the next lap (like collecting $200 in Monopoly.) If a player does not have any shapes to lose when a “Lose 1 Shape” card is drawn, his turn is over and he simply puts the card in the discard pile.
The winner is the player to collect the most shapes in the time allowed.
Assessment:
o Have students complete "I can" cards (attached)
Strategies for Differentiation:
o Have students write a journal entry about their favorite geometric shapes and why.
