Station 3: Toothpick Shapes
Skill Content: Understanding plane and solid geometric figures
Objective: Identify models and pictures of plane geometric figures and solid geometric figures by name.
Materials:
· Plane and Solid Geometric Figures (attached)
· Marshmallow Shapes Chart (attached)
· Miniature Marshmallows and Toothpicks
Directions:
1. Distribute copies of the Plane Geometric Figures & Solid Geometric Figures. Put students into small groups of two or three, and give each group a small bag of marshmallows and a small box of toothpicks.
2. Have students attempt to build the shapes. Have each group complete the chart by tracking the number of marshmallows and toothpicks required to build the shapes.
Assessment:
o Have students complete chart and answer questions at bottom.
o Listen for students to say things like, "These toothpicks are like sides and edges," or, "The marshmallows are like angles and vertices."
Strategies for Differentiation:
o Have students create a notebook of geometry terms. Direct them to divide each page into two sections and to draw a geometric shape in one section and label the shape in the other. Use of color to distinguish the terms may be helpful for some students.
